Rowing NZ

Aon has been a major partner of Rowing New Zealand for 15 years.

The key focus of our relationship with Rowing NZ is our sponsorship of the largest school sports event in the country - the New Zealand Secondary Schools Rowing Championships, often referred to as the 'Aon Maadi Cup'.

This event alternates each year between Lake Karapiro and Lake Ruataniwha and is attended by over 120 schools and over 2,200 young rowers.

Aon are proud to continue the Aon Maadi Cup Legacy.

Aon and Laszlo Boats collaborated to find a way to recognise the hard work and determination of athletes, as well as the support of their schools, and so the Aon Maadi Cup Legacy was born.  The decision to reward the winners of both the male and female under-17 single scull race was simple. Not every school has the ability to enter an eight, or even a team of four, but most schools in the country could participate in the single scull event.

This year's winners were Shakira Mirfin of Southland Girls' High School and Scott Shackleton of Christchurch Boys' High School. Beginning in 2018, Aon’s Maadi Cup Legacy initiative provides the school of both the boy’s and girl’s U17 single scull with a new Laszlo skiff. Russell Bailey of Aon commented today after the presentation of both boats, “Once again we’re incredibly proud to mark the achievements of today’s winners in the boy’s and girl’s U17 single scull category by presenting each of their schools with a new Laszlo skiff. Scott and Shakira both showed incredible determination through this week’s racing and we are grateful for the opportunity to become more involved with their school’s programmes. We were also delighted to see last year’s winning boats throughout this week’s regatta, and are eagerly looking forward to working with more schools in future years.’’

Aon is proud to support youth athletes in a variety of sports; and rowing is no exception. By supporting the under-17 age group, Aon believes they are encouraging capable and determined young athletes to have the opportunity to put their best foot (or oar) forward the following year, with a boat manufactured with the latest innovative rowing technology. The terms and conditions associated with this promotion can be found here.
