Ngatapa Ecological Trust

Ngatapa Station is a privately-owned forest site covering 9,515 hectares of mountainous terrain in the central North Island. The vast majority of the site (86% or 8,183 ha), comprises indigenous vegetation, making Ngatapa a significantly large representative example of unmodified indigenous vegetation. The station holds exceptional regional and national ecological values. Biodiversity surveys have revealed a substantial suite of significant species present at the site, including:

  • Whio (Blue Duck),
  • Kaka,
  • Yellow-crowned kakariki,
  • North Island Brown Kiwi,
  • Kereru,
  • Karearea (NZ falcon),
  • Grey duck,
  • Long-tailed cuckoo,
  • Riflemen,
  • North Island robin,
  • Whitehead,
  • Long-tailed and short-tailed bats, and
  • Various lizard species.

In 2015, kōkako were heard on site for the first time, and two verified sightings of North Island weka occurred. A number of threatened plants including red mistletoe and Kaka beak have also been located. However, without adequate ongoing pest management it is likely that the majority of these species will gradually disappear from the site.

The conservation programme at Ngatapa Station was initiated in 2005. Aon are proud supporters of ‘Operation Nest Egg’, a successful Kiwi breeding program established to hatch eggs in captivity, rear chicks to a weight where they can defend themselves against predators and then release them back into the wild. Aon’s donations also go towards assisting with much needed infrastructure and on-going pest control and monitoring of New Zealand's threatened species.
